BRIEF BITES…
Dumbo: Gomez’s Oatmeal Cafe has opened, and is catering mainly to thirtysomethings with its large selection of nostalgic favorites like flax seed cream of Saltine bark, apple cinnamon Quaker oat lattes, and large, steaming bowls of persimmons porridge.
East Village: Alas, no more cheap drinks and 2-for-1 popcorn balls. After a long struggle starting with the death of owner Phillip Galier’s cat “Mr. Snoodles,” The Checkered Cab is closing down. “I can’t even get out of bed, let alone pour shots of well gin to underage college kids,” says Gailer. “Mr. Snoodles was the heart and soul of this bar, and now that he’s gone, I might as well close up shop. I’ll see you on the other side, Snoodie-Baby.”
Our favorite thrift shop on 2nd Ave., In the Closet, is applying for a beer license.Upper West Side: Chocolate milk bar Brown Water is opening a second location on Amsterdam Ave. Come celebrate next Tuesday with $8 Hershey Squirts and $2 shots of melted butter.
Soho: Former French bistro Coulier will reopen as a Mediterranean restaurant called Stamos.
